Named cardinal in 1985, he served as archivist and librarian of the Church from then until his retirement in 1988. 3 A small volume that was published in English in 1995, The Case for Clerical Celibacy: Its Historical Development and Theological Foundations,4 represents the fruition of his study of the topic.
