We should also keep in mind that awareness of these organizational and other structural contexts, and of reasons for discrimination, is not always a conscious process. Indeed, many people discriminate more or less unconsciously.

From the centuries of the enslavement of people of African descent to the decades of legal segregation following the Civil War to recent decades of informal segregation, black and white Americans have long lived lives separated by the institutional and ideological forces of systemic racism. S. society, and its past and present impacts are extensive and long lasting. The majority of the officers we interviewed reported growing up under legally segregated conditions for some part of their life. Most of these women and men describe or allude to the cumulative effects of this segregation, as well as contemporary informal segregation, in their interviews.
