Detailed treatment of the more complicated techniques is avoided not solely to keep the presentation understandable to readers lacking advanced training in statistics and mathematics; it is avoided also because there are as yet no published examples of fruitful applications of the more complicated techniques and, for reasons discussed below, the assumptions which must be met before those techniques will yield interpretable results are so stringent that the techniques should rarely be used. " Now, however, in nontechnical language the term more often than not is used to refer to a person who is one's companion, accomplice, peer, or associate, or in a collective sense, to a band or a group.

Instead it is a highly flexible tool of great practical utility to social science researchers: Sociologists might use COHORT ANALYSIS to learn if changes in friendship groups result from exposure to new people, changes of Page 6 attitudes within a cohort, or such other factors as increased education or economic status. The problem in such a study would be to identify changing cohorts over time as the reference groups for the individuals change. Political scientists might use COHORT ANALYSIS to inquire whether members of a legislative body tend to display similar voting patterns as their careers progress.

However, respondents may have insights into why they have changed, or at least their explanations can usefully be taken into account. For instance, a person who has changed his political orientation may attribute that change to a number of important national events, or perhaps to an aspect of social aging, such as marriage and the assumption of family responsibilities. Obviously, a retrospective study would almost always be a useful adjunct to a cohort study, but if the researcher does not have the resources to gather his or her own data and must rely on available data, combining retrospective and cohort studies is rarely possible.
