By incorporating richer conceptions of social relations into analyses of comparative conflict and peace processes through more intensive dialogue with sociology, my research follows the pathways of political scientists studying social movements or ethnic politics (Horowitz, 1985; McAdam, Tilly, & Tarrow, 2001; Todd, 2010) who work on these boundaries.
My research methodology places the voices of research subjects at the center. It draws on ideas and tools from feminist ethnography that determines the nature of the research process and requires the researcher’s commitment to ensure that her work is informed by feminist ethics of care. My aim is to obtain knowledge in ways that can be used by research participants to change the exploitative conditions of their society (Skeggs, 1994). 156). Situated within the wider feminist decolonization framework,5 my research is based on working with people and on the need for, 36 C r o s s i ng B ou n da r i e s du r i ng P e ac e a n d C on f l ic t not only understanding and empathizing with the “subjects” of our study, but also for sharing with the “objects” of the research a political compromise (Leyva Solano & Speed, 2008).
I have chosen these cases for a variety of reasons. First, they allow me to achieve a maximum variance along relevant dimensions (gender and ethnic identity) and different ways of relating these dimensions. Further, my research question evolved during my work as practitioner in Chiapas and was reenergized in discussions with practitioners from Northern Ireland. While the latter group shared some of the experiences of the activists from Chiapas, they were positioned in very different spaces and had consequently different experiences.
