The reasons for this turmoil are diverse and include both indigenous and European factors.

Europe has been one of the important importers of Botswana beef, which picked up in the 1970s as abattoirs were opened in Lobatse, Maun, and Francistown. One of the major constraints to cattle export has been periodic outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease that have required strong measures, including continuously manned cordon fences that stretch across the country, to control it.
