Five horses had valvular vegetations and 1 had thrombi on the chordae tendinae. Vegetations were commonest on mitral valves. Valvular lesions consisted of rough ened or disrupted endothelium, fibrovascular proliferations, fibrin strands, and infiltration with mixed populations of inflammatory cells. Gram negative rods were seen in the vegetations of 2 horses, but were not cultured. In one case, the yeast, Candida parapsilosis, was identified by mor phological characteristics of the pscudohyphac and growth in differential culture media.

Several cases of cardiomyopathy possibly related to dietary deficiencies have been published (Wilson et al. 1976). The cardiac lesions were seen in 3 of 10 foals and horses with suspected nutritional myopathy. Lesions included fragmentation of cardiac muscle fibers and focal myocardial ischemia. The putative nutritional cause was not demon strated. Rhythm abnormalities Atrial fibrillation Atrial fibrillation is a common disorder of cardiac rhythm, which has been recognized for many years. It is particularly common in horses training for events such as racing and hunting.

Two of the 3 were weak and ataxic with cyanosis and respiratory distress. Two of the 3 spontaneously converted to normal rhythm within 4 hours of birth, while a third apparently responded to procainamide by converting to normal rhythm. Idioventricular tachycardia Miller et al. (1987) recorded a case of idio ventricular tachycardia in a 4-year-old Thorough bred mare. The condition, in which a ventricular pacemaker evolved independently of the normal sinoatrial pacemaker, was detected incidentally.
