Maybe the poem appeals because it helps us to say we are not feeling quite in our right minds, or that our minds are changing in ways which feel chaotic. Once we start to look beyond the poem itself, having seen there is meaning in it for us, we feel the unaccustomed excitement of following our own intuition. Familiar boundaries blast away into imaginative space. As someone has made a link with King Lear and the suffering he goes through to see things clearly at last, so another thinks of a juggler who is performing for an audience and trying to keep as many balls in the air as possible.

This approach took shape for me over two or three years following my qualification as a family therapist. This was a time when I decided to revisit previous aspects of my life and interests. It was a sort of consolidation period in which I felt the need to reconcile current passions with previous ones. When I had safely achieved a therapy qualification and begun to practise, I enrolled in some literature classes and again fell under the spell. Having manoeuvred myself into this position, I then began to find a thought creeping in with increasing urgency: “this critical reading is just like the sort of thinking and talking I do when I’m working with families, only better”.

Currently it is unwise to dismiss EastEnders as a source of social relationship models. In the helping professions there is no substitute for careful listening by a practitioner who is both sympathetic and empathetic, someone who appreciates the situation in the context of the larger systems which surround it, and someone who understands to the greatest possible extent from the inside too. This understanding comes from a stock of personal experiences.
