After years of dipping her paddle into the waters off the village of Tivoli, she got here to grasp the rocks and tree limbs, currents and eddies, mansions and islands so good that she claimed that component to the river as her personal: her achieve. Woven into Rogers's intimate exploration of the river is the tale of her existence as a girl within the outdoors―rock mountaineering and mountaineering in addition to kayaking.

Rogers writes of the Hudson River with ability and vivacity. Her powerful feel of position informs her engagement with a waterway that lured the early Dutch settlers, entranced nineteenth-century painters, and has been marked by way of a long time of toxins. Emmet and I packed up and continued south in the rain. I loitered for a while to watch a great blue heron, poised and still in the shallow waters. Then, without warning, it plunged, beak first into the water. There, speared at the end of the heron’s long beak, was a fish flopping about. The heron stood, looking stunned in its own way, before flipping the fish into its beak. I saw the bulge of fish as it moved down the long, thin neck of the bird. The solitary statuesque figures of great blue herons dot the riverbanks.

The weather, which was at first a burden, was now a hazard. We stuck as close to the rocky shoreline as possible, hunched over in our boats, waves jostling us about. My vista shrank as my eyes trained on the small apron of water in front of my boat, anticipating the next wave that might knock me over. We pulled onto a sandy beach to pee, the waves hurtling me onto the shore. I stepped out of my boat, my legs limp. “My sister lives in Tarrytown,” Emmet said. ” Emmet had mentioned his sister before, but I had not paid attention; stopping before Manhattan never was an option.

I launched into river tales, emphasizing the heroics of our long days and our landings in the dark. “You sound like you are eighteen again,” my father said in his “My daughter is a lovable nut” voice. Of course he did not want me to be eighteen. When I was that age, I jumped in a VW bug and drove to Colorado with my friend Neil. We slept in parking lots and rock climbed every day. When I look at my eighteen-year-old students I see how careless and young they are. ” I once asked my father. He looked at me stunned.
