The word is significantly used in all the poems, though least in Patience and Cleanness. In Patience Jonah actually accuses God of courtesy, when reproaching God for his mildness towards Nineveh, and courtesy suggests patience. In Cleanness Lot's moderate and placatory words to the mob are called courtesy, and courtesy in the poem is identified with cleanness both literal and metaphorical. In Pearl the paradoxical loving relationships of hierarchy and equality, and God's own grace, are called courtesy.
