However, within two months of the declaration of war they were to be brutally surprised. Attacks by the Nigeria Regiment at three points across the border – on the hill fortress of Mora, on Garua on the Benue river and on Nsankang in the south – were successfully repelled by the Germans with the loss of Nigerian and British lives and valuable guns and ammunition. Colonel Charles Carter, the British commander, was withdrawn. This embarrassed Frederick Lugard, who was Governor-General of the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria 1913–18, and encouraged the British to work more closely with the French, who were still smarting from the cession of territory to German Cameroon in 1911.
Only a fifth of German Cameroon came under British administration. France also picked up the League of Nations mandate for most of the German colony of Togo, adjoining the Gold Coast to its west, with only a sliver going with the Gold Coast. London had little ambition for further imperial expansion in west Africa. Nigerian emirs who had eyed their traditional lands across the German Cameroon border, lost by the Anglo-German agreement of 1890, were largely disappointed. Some parts of the old Bornu Empire and Adamawa Emirate were retrieved, and some valuable plantations fell on the British side of the line.
The German colony was surrounded, and on 27 September the port town of Douala surrendered to HMS Challenger, a battleship, even before Dobell’s troops had landed. The British captured nine cargo vessels there and, by the end of 1914, had overrun cocoa, rubber and fruit plantations in nearby Buea-Victoria. But the Germans were not an easy pushover, even though some of their subjects took the opportunity to rebel, and there 18 | Nigeria was continuous friction between the British and the French at the command level.
