A member of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Stickler was successively professor of canon law, dean of the faculty of canon law, and rector of the Salesian University in Rome. Named cardinal in 1985, he served as archivist and librarian of the Church from then until his retirement in 1988. 3 A small volume that was published in English in 1995, The Case for Clerical Celibacy: Its Historical Development and Theological Foundations,4 represents the fruition of his study of the topic. In this book and elsewhere, Stickler stresses the importance of using the tools of modern historiography in order to properly appreciate historical texts that speak about clerical celibacy, the development of what is often called clerical continence.

The early sources had not yet developed a method for the study of legal texts. Thus, the Decretals of Gratian,41 so important for the history of canon law, uncritically accepted as fact the story of Paphnutius’ intervention at Nicea and canon 13 of the Second Council of Trullo (Quinisext), which convened in Constantinople in 691 during the reign of Justinian III. 44 Subject to the rigorism of contemporary historical criticism, their claim is patently false. Trullo II misquoted the Council of Carthage.

Heid rightly regards it as a polemic against the West and speaks of its “anti-Roman tongue-lashing”48 and ultimately dismisses its significance as “one, single, little point—which is nonetheless momentous”49 The historical overview of the discipline of clerical celibacy reveals that it is really a history of a discipline of clerical continence whose by-product was the discipline of clerical celibacy as it is generally understood today—namely, the renunciation of marriage and with that a concomitant life of abstinence from sexual union and the procreation of children.
