Although species and breed differences can complicate the picture, there are features that are common to most of these investigations. Details of when and how the injury occurred, and what actions were taken immediately, and later, can be crucial. Statements or records of interviews with people associated with the investigation may highlight important inconsistencies regarding times, clinical signs, treatments, locations and husbandry practices.

Although the sequence of events that led to loss of the jawbone could not be ascertained with any degree of confidence, pathology clarified the timescale (many weeks) required for the bone to be removed and for the ends of the damaged jaw to be encased in connective tissue. It was established that there had been no surgery to the jaw. Statements were also made regarding the suffering related to the original injury that caused the necrosis and loss of the jawbone. Additionally, informed comment was made on the relationship between the jaw problems, the resulting difficulty in eating and drinking, and the lack of other chronic systemic disease to account for the emaciation.
