It was a lesson to Heisman, and in the same article he said that thereafter he never told his teams how good they were but instead dished out criticism even when they played at their best.

He demanded. "W'hat are you going to do—shoot at the lights? " We explained about Pop Thaver's kicking—or tried to. "Gwan," he scoffed. "Do you know how high those lights are? " "Show him, Pop," I said, tossing Thayer a tight ball. Pop took a little hitch and then threw his foot against the ball. There was a horrid smash above us and a rain of broken glass descended. 40 Heisman further revealed his awareness of the early game's peculiarities as he rationalized the upright stance of linemen during his college football days: Nearly all linemen, as a rule, lined up squarely against those who played the same position on the opposing team.

Because of extensive arguing between teams, the two umpires were eliminated the following year and only the referee was allowed to officiate. T h e 1885 season introduced rule changes under which a player could be ejected from the game for a first fighting offense, and teams were now subject to a five-yard penalty for being offside. By 1887, two officials were back on the field: a referee to make on-field decisions concerning progress of the ball and an umpire to watch for fighting violations. Even so, some players still managed to make a practice of deceiving the officials.
