Of particular importance in this analysis is that adults come to employee training programs with a certain amount of related knowledge, skills, and attitudes gathered from previous experiences they’ve had, both on the job and off.

Most scholars in the field recognize many similarities between the learning patterns of adults and children while acknowledging those characteristics that are unique to adults. The characteristics of adults that seem to most influence learning pertain to demographic and experiential backgrounds, capacity and competence, and attitudes. One of the most important demographic questions is whether age influences one’s ability to learn. Most feel that age per se is not a good indication of who is likely to be the best learner.
